Prabal for Target DIY Alterations

Sick of reading about the whole Prabal for Target thing on my blog? Well get used to it, there is more to come.

I got this dress because I fell in love with the print! For that particular print, it was only available in the shift dress by the time I got online.

It was too big, even though some forums have expressed that this collection fits small, but for some pieces, it fits TTS or on the larger side. This dress definitely fits in that category. I usually wear a small, but this small is medium on me. Or maybe I shrunk *tee hee*.

Anyway, I can't really wear this as is. Even though, I have styled it out into an outfit that received many likes on Instagram.

It could be because I am itching to use my sewing machine.

I have foreseen this dress turning into a crop top and a skirt. So on my day off, I got to work and got to cutting.

First, I sort of measured out where I wanted to cut with another skirt.

Then I proceeded to sever the dress into to two.

Soon, I had two pieces instead of one.

Now it's just a matter to refining.

For some reason, I am really digging cropped things lately. On top of that, a hi-lo crop top. So I made a hyperbolic cut in the front.

The result looks like thus.

But, I cut a little too high and now that top threatens to flash the under garment. Only one way to remedy this, drop the neck line to reprieve some length.

The end result is this, something more relaxed and beachy looking.

Now the bottom, this is where more heavy lifting is required.

Since the bottom portion is pretty large to sit naturally on my hips, I have to think of a way to remedy that.

The easiest thing to do is to make a draw string of sorts. I have yet to venture into "taking things in" territory.

So my first step is to fold the top down to make the encasement for the drawstring.

You can pretty much use any string for the drawstring string, but I decided to use the same material and cut off a thin strip from the skirt portion.

Now, just sew it up with the sewing machine.

And then pull the string through.

Now I have a super cute tennis like skirt.

I think I am much happier with how the skirt turned out than how the top did.

But now I do have two pieces of items with this crazy awesome print.

Did I make a huge mistake?

Well, good thing the dress is still in stores. Plus, this amazing top as well.

  1. I actually really like how the top came out! It would look super cute layered over a dress or like you said, for a more beachy occasion.

    1. Thanks Youri! I actually did layer it over the dress and it turnout pretty cute. But it's still kinda too wide for my liking, maybe I will have to actually take it in...

  2. You are so talented...and brave! I'd be terrified to cut a dress into two pieces, it would not be pretty. lol. I'm absolutely love the skirt, it turned out great!
