Eight Ways to Style a Skirt :: Sheer Maxi Skirt and Printed Dress

I live for versatility. I try to think of at least one alternate way to wear almost everything I own. Some pieces have a higher utility rating than others though.

No matter how hard I try, wearing a jacket upside down is still only going to amount to looking silly 95% of the time.

One of my absolute favourite piece of clothing to transform is a sheer maxi skirt.

Seemingly, this elongating tool can only be worn one way but really, it can be worn eight ways.

I started it with a printed dress. Since the maxi skirt is sheer, the dress underneath saves me from having to wear a slip. If your maxi skirt isn't sheer, you can wear any of the following styles with any top you like.

All these methods work much better if the maxi dress is more of a tulip, meaning more materials on the bottom than the top. An a-line skirt would be very limiting since the material won't have much give.

1. Maxi skirt underneath the dress

I'm starting with the skirt underneath the dress.

I am not super attached to this look, mainly because the dress is kind of boxy. If I layered a bodycon dress over top, the effect would be much nicer. Perhaps I will demonstrate in a future post.

2. Belted with maxi skirt under the dress

A waist definition tool is needed. Enter, the belt.

Ah better. This large flower belt is one of my absolute favorites. You can define your waist with any belt you like.

3. Maxi skirt over the dress

For these looks, I like this dress more as a top. Inside it goes.

I pulled the dress up and out a bit to create a more stylish look.

4. Belted with maxi skirt over the dress

Of course you can belt it and yet another look is created.

For this look, a wider belt would be better than a thinner one in my opinion.

I also love to alter the hem length of these skirts with out actually doing any sewing or cutting.

This next look is a bit more alternative. Not for everyone, the skirt is actually changed into more of an accent piece than a skirt.

5. Maxi skirt as an accent piece

I actually like this look, but probably with a shirt and leggings instead of this dress.

Again, a belt changes the look.

6. Belted maxi skirt as an accent piece

This next look is very simple to achieve.

7. Maxi skirt into a midi skirt

Pick the skirt up from about the mid point, lift and tuck into the sides. Voila, the maxi becomes the midi.

It's a more playful look.

The final look is my absolute favourite.

8. Maxi skirt into a high-low skirt

Simply pick up the skirt from the bottom hem and tuck it into the top. This look on it's own is cool enough, most days I just leave it as is, especially if your maxi skirt is tight enough on top.

Of course I like it better with my favorite belt.

I liked this combination so much, I just had to do a full styled shoot.

Or shop in your own closet, maybe these new styling techniques will breath new life into an old maxi skirt you haven't worn in awhile?

Add some leggings or tights, perfect for fall time.

Happy hump day.

  1. Love the way you styled this sheer skirt! I covered sheer and sexy on my blog too... check it out at link below. Judging from the recent runways at NYFW, sheer is here to say (I especially loved the way Prabal Gurung incorporated the trend).
