EFW06 Backstage Access

Vancouver Television is recounting Eco Fashion Week again day by day.

Check out their Vimeo channel for more videos.

ECO Fashion Week Monday from Vancouver Television on Vimeo.

A perfect chance for me to share some back stage photos captured by the talented Iulia Agnew.

The preparation work on my end started with hanging all the clothes up and tagging with the model's name and the sequence of the outfit.

It's amazing to see all my outfits hung and ordered.

Some last minute shuffling was required especially when it came to the shoes.

Everything seems to be under control, I finally had some time to do some mingling.

Final day of EFW06 Vendors and Craftsmen Galore

Counting down Eco Fashion Week has made me more thankful than ever that we have so many sustainable and eco-friendly fashion options around us.

Especially in light of the factory collapse in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on April 27, 2013, we need to do our part to seek out more sustainable, local and ethical options.

A great option in Vancouver, aside from Value Village is My Sister's Closet. They support the Battered Women’s Support Services by donating their proceeds to them. Next time you need that perfect something, please check them out.

They get many amazing pieces donated to them from Aritzia and even locally filmed TV shows.

Next up is a local leather crafts maker Five Left.

"Originally from southern Washington state, designer lincoln heller worked in an Alaskan logging camp to pay for his schooling at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. It was there that he began working with leather in his spare time, making tool pouches from discarded boots. Upon returning to Vancouver BC, lincoln began crafting custom bags for men. fiveleft leather has since evolved into a full line of accessories for men and women, gaining recognition each season for its distinctive rugged yet refined look."

Their colourful and well made leather goods can brighten up any outfit.

This final designer has been one I have been watching for a while. They are the dynamic duo behind Hey Jude.

"Hey Jude Shop is a collection of vintage clothing that is curated by co-creators Lauren Clark and Lyndsey Chow. Based out of Vancouver, Hey Jude was born in 2010 after the girls realized how much they loved scouring markets and thrift stores around the world for the perfect pieces to add to their growing collections. With focus on quality, style and fabrics the collections always fit in seamlessly with the seasons current trends."

EFW06 Review Day 3 War Paint Stole My Heart

Day three of Eco Fashion Week only built upon the momentum.

Again, these amazing photos are brought to you by Peter Jensen Photography.

Here are my favourite pieces from these amazing designers.

Starting with Sally Omeme

"Receiving no formal training in fashion design Sally Omeme learned to knit from her Mother in the early 2000’s. One year knitting 75 scarfs. It wasn’t until She attended the John Casablancas Institute in August 2011, her dream of becoming a knitwear designer was encouraged by her instructors. She knit her first collection for the John Casablancas Institute fashion show Empyrean on May 22, 2012.

As a newly emerging knitwear designer, Sally Omeme has bright hopes for the future. Never afraid to experiment using different fabrics. The entire collection for Eco Fashion Week has been created using second hand materials.

When not knitting, she continues to pursue her passion projects of writing, creating, working on photo shoots, and dreaming up other passion projects."

I am always at awe when people can take strings essentially and make them into clothing. It's especially amazing, when the pieces end up looking like these.

Svensk

"SVENSK is an Eco Friendly Knitwear brand that was founded in 2008 by 19-year old Diana Svensk. All materials are Eco Friendly and produced in a sustainable way. The brand is currently sold in 12 countries, been featured in international magazines and won awards in Sweden for it’s work with combining fashion and design with sustainable thinking."

Her work is ever so playful and young. It reminds me of a carefree time, when all I had to worry about was nothing.

Evan Ducharme.

"He use all natural fibres in his collections, sourced from local suppliers, as well as a number of “eco” fabrics such as hemp, organic cotton, tencel. He also use reclaimed and repurposed fabrics, as well as fabrics that are considered “roll-ends” that will otherwise be thrown out and put into landfills. Also, He doesn't mass produce my collections, as everything is made-to-order and custom. These pieces are made either by himself or other specialized artisans in Vancouver (such as knitwear)."

I love the blend of thick knits and flowy pieces. This whole collection is extremely feminine and wearable. I would rock out any of these pieces.

Merely Me

"MERELY M.E. creates accessories and jewelry from at least 80% recycled materials (specializing in paper products and organic fabrics) and scrap natural fibers to create each piece’s structure. From recycled paper products, we are able to produce our packaging and mailing boxes that each piece comes in. Our dedication to “green fashion” is not only in our clothing, but in our outreach and education components as well. We have a recycle program for customers; fans of our social media accounts send us paper products and old t-shirts that we turn into new items. As a special thank you, we send free gifts made of recycled materials to our supporters. Nature, and especially my travels to other states and countries heavily influence how I design responsible clothing, accessories and jewelry. Nothing goes to waste: everything is re-shaped, upcycled and presented in a different way."

I love the feeling of pureness this whole collection evokes. Not just because it's mainly white, but the way they are put together. So airy, pure and heavenly.

Last but most definitely not least, my favourite designer of them all, War Paint by Stevie Crowne.

"=War Paint= fashion customization is a streetwear collection by newcomer Stevie Crowne that begins with existing items such as jackets, sunglasses, or hats archived from vintage & retail outlets. It is the added embellishments & applique that uniquely transform each item into a one-of-a-kind show piece. The vibe is rebellious and playful, with spikes & studs planted in pleasing designs and studs freshly dotting the landscape of items you thought you knew."

This kid is amazing! He takes thrifting to a whole new level by upcyling every piece of leather, varsity, and bomber jackets he finds from Value Village or Salvation Army.

After he is done "bedazzling" them, they are reborn in a way that will make you never want to buy new again.

This rock n' roll, Mad Max, post apocalyptical organized frienzy sings to me and make me want to abandon all rules and regulations and embrace anarchy.
